THE NORTHERN SPIRE

July 20th, 2012, posted in 2012, Burning Man 2011, HDR, Nevada

I’m going Burning Man photo heavy this week because I can feel my ticket getting closer to me. It is really what it is all about. The highs and lows, the uncertainty. The bliss of achievement. When I get back this year, it will be so much sweeter because of the struggle. I’m sad that I can’t bring my family again, though. This ticket mess has not allowed us to plan properly for us all. It is easy with just me. I can load up the Rabbit and fly… but with the family, we’d have to rent a uhaul to bring 3x the amount of bikes and gear, food and water. I think it was meant to be this way, though. I’ve heard that the conditions are going to be super rough this year with the lack of rain. White outs are inevitable. I’d prefer their first experience be more than just survival.

BLACK ROCK ROLLER DISCO

All night, every night, you can get these crazy light paintings at Burning Man. I would just set up at someplace interesting (which was so easy to find) and wait for something weird to go by. This year should be even better. More art installations have been registered than ever before.

TEMPLE UNICORN

I don’t even remember this little filly posing for me, but I’m glad she did! I can feel the energy building for this years burn. I don’t have a ticket yet, but I’m sure there is one out there for me… somewhere.
There are like 300 tix on Stubhub, but that goes against everything that Burning Man is about. I have some new art to bring for gifts and some Public Work shifts I’d like to volunteer for, but it’s really hard to plan when it is still out of my hands. Come on Universe… help a burner out! <3

THE TEMPLE AT SUNSET

Burning Man 2011 was so awesome. I don’t know if I’ll get tickets to this years burn, but that will make any future burns that much more special.

SCORPION VS. MANTIS

October 1st, 2011, posted in Burning Man 2011

This was the perfect night for photography at Burning Man. It was Saturday, and everything was happening in full force. We had burned “the Man” earlier in the night and everyone was in a festive mood. There was no wind, so the D700 was coming out to play for the night.

These two mutant vehicles were preparing for a night out on the playa. They were making last minute adjustments and checking their fire when I got this shot. I fired off 9 brackets from this position in order to have several sequences to merge. People were walking by and the vehicles would alternate fire, but never together. So this shot is merged in Photoshop, combining the best of several photos.

MY BURNING MAN NEIGHBORS

This is one group of my neighbors from Burning Man 2011. They were from Michigan and were all so cool and helpful. They came in this huge green church bus which also served as a great platform for seeing what was going on at the Playa. From left to right are Jane, Kevin, Kate, Jordan and Jesse. They don’t know how much I appreciate them welcoming a virgin burner twice their age and showing me the ropes.

Since getting back to reality, we’ve all friended each other on facebook. It’s really cool how you can do that now. I like being able to keep up with people I can only see once a year. The more I travel, the more diverse my friends list becomes.

I think that is important so you’re not conditioned to one singular way of thinking. Experiencing other peoples environments helps keep your mind open to new and alternative ideas, which then expands into newer ideas still.
